Haskap

Haskap is an exciting new crop for North America. Many people describe their taste like a cross between blueberries and raspberries.  There are no discernible seeds when eaten fresh.  The early varieties are the first fruit crops to ripen, even before strawberries, later ripening varieties are ripe three weeks later.

Since receiving funding from Saskatchewan Agriculture in 2006, the University of Saskatchewan has made controlled crosses resulting in thousands of seedlings.  They are already seeing impressive results in faster growing plants and larger berries. Perhaps more exciting are the wonderful flavours that occur in different plants in the breeding program.

The University of Saskatchewan is ultimately striving to breed the best tasting traits into a crop that can be mechanically harvested and that spans early, mid, and late seasons.
